121st Field Artillery Regiment “Dark Skies”

The U.S. Army Center of Military History has formally recognized the 121st Field Artillery Regiment special designation as “Dark Skies,” see https://history.army.mil/…/special_designations.html.

In the mountains of Afghanistan the 1st Battalion, 121st Field Artillery launched multiple missiles onto an enemy location, destroying all targets and insurgents in that area. The missile strike gave no warning that danger was imminent unlike that of other artillery assets. Following the mission, the chatter heard from the insurgents was that no one should go to that location by stating in Pashto “اسمانونه خراب وو, “translated as “skies were bad.” “DARK” was added to represent the marks left on the target following the strike.
